WELCOME:
The
Sleep and Attention Disorders Institutes specialize in Sleep
Medicine and in Clinical Neurophysiology. We evaluate and treat
sleep disorders including snoring and sleep apnea, narcolepsy,
daytime sleepiness, insomnia, and parasomnia. We also evaluate
and treat brain disorder (encephalopathy) with attention deficit
(commonly known as ADHD) using brain mapping of cognitive evoked
potentials.
Clinical
Neurophysiology Services is a Professional Corporation. It runs
the Sleep Disorders Institute,
accredited by the
American Academy of Sleep
Medicine. It also runs the Attention Disorders Institute.
R. Bart Sangal, M.D., Director, is Board Certified in Sleep
Medicine and in Clinical Neurophysiology by the
American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
We believe you
are our guest when you come to our office. We promise to treat
you with courtesy and respect.
We take pride in
usually running within 15 minutes of your appointment time.
However, if a patient arrives late or has unusual problems, we
do get behind. Patients are seen in order of their appointment
time, not the time they arrive. If you arrive early, you may
have to wait till your appointment time. If you arrive late, you
may have to wait till an opening in the schedule, or we may not
be available to see you at all. This may happen especially if
you are one of the last scheduled patients for the session.
We see ourselves
as your junior partner in health.
We explain your
condition to you in terms you can understand, and discuss the
pros and cons of various management options. You then decide
about treatment with our aid.
Our primary task
is evaluation, diagnosis, and recommending management. All
testing is performed exclusively at our testing facilities in
the Troy office. After we reach a diagnosis, we can begin and
continue treatment, we can begin treatment with your personal
physician continuing it, or your personal physician can begin
and continue treatment with the help of our findings.
What
is Clinical Neurophysiology?
Clinical
Neurophysiology is a young specialty that uses the electrical activity of the
brain and nerves to help in diagnoses. It started out in the 1930's, when a
psychiatrist named Berger discovered the Electroencephalogram (EEG); since then
it has expanded rapidly. Central Neurophysiology is the body of methods used in
diagnosis of disorders involving the brain, and includes Sleep Medicine, EEG,
and Evoked Potentials.
Dr. Sangal
specializes in those aspects of Central Neurophysiology that involve higher
brain functions. These include Snoring with Sleep Apnea, Attention Deficit,
Daytime Sleepiness, and Insomnia.
Neurophysiological
techniques are useful in the diagnosis of these disorders. Specific techniques
include polysomnography, multiple sleep latency testing, and brain mapping of
cognitive task-relevant long latency evoked potentials. Medical treatment has
success rates that are better than 90% for many disorders of sleep and
attention.
